Metabase Setup Guide
Prerequisites
- Access to your Metabase instance with administrative privileges.
- A Matia account with the necessary permissions to configure integrations.
- (Optional) If your Metabase instance uses an IP allowlist, you will need the Matia IP address. Please contact Matia support to obtain the relevant IP.
Setup Guide
1. Create a Metabase User for Matia
- In your Metabase instance, click the gear icon in the upper right and select Admin Settings.
- Switch to the People tab at the top of the page.
- Click Invite someone in the upper right.
- Enter the details for the new user:
- First name: For example,
Matia - Last name: For example,
User - Email: Use an email address appropriate for integration.
- First name: For example,
- Click Create at the bottom of the dialog.
- When prompted, click Done.
2. Create a Group for Matia
- In Admin Settings, stay on the People tab.
- Open the Groups tab on the left side.
- Click Create a group in the top right.
- Enter a Group name, for example
Matia. - Click Add on the right of the row to create the group.
Add the User to the Group
- Click the
Matiagroup you just created. - Click Add members in the upper right.
- Start typing the name of the user created above (e.g.,
Matia User) and select it. - Click Add on the right of the row to confirm.
3. Set Permissions
Minimum Permissions (for Metadata Extraction)
- In Admin Settings, go to the Permissions tab.
- Switch to the Collection permissions tab at the top.
- For each collection you want Matia to extract metadata from:
- Under Collections on the left, click the collection.
- Under _Permissions for _, for the
Matiagroup, click the No access drop-down. - (Optional) To include sub-collections, toggle Also change sub-collections.
- Select the View permission.
- Click Save changes in the upper right.
- When prompted with Save permissions?, click Yes to confirm.
Complete Permissions (Required for Lineage)
- In Admin Settings, switch to the People tab.
- For the Matia user created earlier, under Groups, change the drop-down value to Administrators.
Note: Administrator access is required to retrieve the default source database name used for queries. These permissions are only available to Administrators.
4. (Optional) Allowlist the Matia IP
If your Metabase instance restricts access via an IP allowlist, you must add Matia's IP address. Please contact Matia support to obtain the correct IP for allowlisting.
Configuring the Matia Metabase Asset
- Username: The username for the Metabase user account you created for Matia. This account should have the permissions described above.
- Password: The password for the Metabase user account.
- Server URL: The full URL for your Metabase instance, including the https://.
- Enter a Name for the asset.
- (Optional) Enter a Description for the asset.
- Select the Owner of the asset.
- (Optional) Verify that your Metabase account is successfully connected by clicking on Test Connection.
- Click Connect.
Additional Notes

Matia does not modify any dashboards, collections, or questions within Metabase during integration.

For best results and full lineage extraction, assign the Matia user to the Administrators group.

If you encounter issues, verify that the user and group permissions are correctly set as described above.

Asset Name: A display name for this Metabase connection within Matia.

Asset Description: (Optional) A description to help identify the purpose or context of this connection.

Asset Owner: The user or group in Matia who will be responsible for this asset. This should be a valid Matia username or group; multiple owners can be assigned if needed[2].
