View lineage for a table

Lineage shows how data flows into and out of specific tables: from ETL sources and warehouse tables, through dbt models, to the BI layer or reverse ETL destinations. This guide explains how to view lineage in the catalog. For concepts, see How catalog and lineage work and Lineage reference.

Open the Lineage Tab

  1. Go to Catalog in the left sidebar.
  2. Browse or search to find the table you want to explore lineage from.
  3. Open the Lineage tab. If the table has lineage, a canvas appears with that table as the home node.

Explore the Lineage Canvas

  • Home node: The table you opened is the center of the graph.
  • Arrows: Show direction of data flow. Use the controls (e.g. arrows left/right) to navigate upstream and downstream and expand the graph. Use the single/double arrows to quickly expand one or more levels upstream or downstream.
  • Nodes: Can include tables, dbt models (connecting tables), and Matia integrations (ETL and reverse ETL) as nodes. Lineage can span from ETL sources through the warehouse, through transformations, to the BI layer (e.g. Tableau, Omni, Metabase) when connected.

To see more details on a given node click on it or on the information (i) icon to open a sidebar with details for that table, integration, or dbt model. You can stay in lineage view while inspecting metadata, recent syncs, or model SQL.

Use Lineage

  • Root cause: Trace upstream to find where data or schema changes originated.
  • Impact: Trace downstream to see which reports, models, or destinations depend on this table.
  • Context: Use the sidebar to see owners, tags, monitors, and sync status for each node.

Lineage is built from connected warehouse metadata, Matia integrations, dbt, and BI tools. Ensure your warehouse, integrations, and dbt are connected so the graph is complete. See Asset types and Lineage for reference.
