Configure alert routing for monitors

This guide explains how to route alerts from observability monitors to the right people and channels, and how to override default notification behavior. For concepts, see How monitors work.

Recipient Channels

When creating or editing a monitor, set Recipient channels to one or more channels available based on connected notification integrations (e.g. Slack, PagerDuty, MS Teams). Alerts for that monitor are sent to those channels. Ensure the notification integrations are configured in Settings → Notifications so channels appear in the list.

Workspace Default (Account Settings)

In SettingsAccount settingsObservability, you can set the default notification behavior for all monitors:

  • Typically: one notification when an issue is created (monitor enters alerting) and one when the issue resolves.

This default applies to every monitor unless you override it per monitor.

Override per Monitor

When creating or editing a monitor, use Notification behavior override to change how this monitor notifies:

  • Default: Use the workspace setting (notify on issue create and resolve).
  • Override: e.g. send a notification on every monitor run that is anomalous, not only on create/resolve. Use this when you need run-level visibility for critical monitors.

Override applies only to that monitor; others still follow the workspace default.

Where to Configure

  • At creation: In step 3 of Add Monitor, set Recipient channels and Notification behavior override.
  • After creation: Open the monitor → click the Edit (pencil) icon in the right sidebar → update Recipient channels and Notification behavior override.
